The Mantells

Saturday, September 5th @ 10:00pm

The Mantells play some of the best songs from the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s, but not just the same old stuff everyone else plays. They choose great classics but not the songs you hear every week. It’s always good to hear Tommy Tutone thrown into a broad mix of music.

The Keystone Ska Exchange

keystone

The Keystone Ska Exchange is a straight ska outfit based in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Our sound is very “rootsy”. We’re not out to impress people with odd time signatures, key-changing chord progressions, and drop tuning – we hope to make people dance and enjoy themselves. Music should be fun and we try to have as much as possible. We keep it plain and simple – filling the voids with catchy riffs, and honest lyrics. Where other bands try to be the next new thing we take it back to the roots – even covering songs straight from ‘Studio 1 (Jamaica). During the summer of 2007 Cornball had returned to Williamsport from Phoenix Arizona with the goal of forming a ska band. Jamming with at that time roomate Al Meck they decided that it was time Williamsport had a decent Ska band to call its own. A few lineup changes later and The Keystone Ska Exchange is now ready to take stride. We’re not here to lie to you and say that this is the best thing to hit your ears or anything like that. I just hope you enjoy our music as much as we enjoy playing it.

The Dirty Nickels

Saturday, August 21st @ 10:00pm

“The Dirty Nickels are a unique trio that love to find a groove. The band blends blues, funk, rock, R&B, and soul, for a sound reminiscent of the classic blues/rock scene of the late 60s and 70s that brought us such greats as the Allman Brothers, the Blues Brothers, etc. Extremely talented musicians, The Dirty Nickels love to ride the groove for all it’s worth. Quite frankly, they do it quite well.” -Billtown Blues Association

RON FLEEGER AND THE STRANGER

SATURDAY – AUGUST 7TH @ 10:00pm

“Acoustic Rock & Roll trio Ron Fleeger & The Stranger was brought to life by Pennsylvania regional musicians Ron Fleeger (lead vocals/guitar), Keith C. Kavanaugh (drums/percussion/backing vocals), and Ian Fink (bass/backing vocals). Conceived in the fall of 2007 they barreled into the Independent Rock&Roll scene armed not with huge drums and stacked amps but acoustic guitars, minimal drums, and a mellow bottom end. What would motivate a band to bring such a minimal setup to the stage in such an incredibly competitive industry? Desire to change, progress and separate from the pack! A band with undeniable work ethic Ron Fleeger & The Stranger make every effort to master and maintain their craft by creating and recreating the music that feels the most natural to them and their fans… Rock&Roll! Their energetic stage presence is complimented by a professional and understanding attitude for both the audience and the venue. When it’s all said and done the audience is already looking forward to the next show… with ear drums still intact.”

Since 1997 the members of Ron Fleeger & The Stranger have been a constant presence in the independent music scene. Booked at festivals, private functions, theatres, coffee houses, workshops, night clubs and taverns they worked hard at establishing the ethics and chops that, today, have become the very backbone of the band. They have performed in front of celebrities, politicians, and just about everyone else in between. Eleven years later, experience in hand, RF&TS knows what needs to be done and how to do it. Their original catalog boasts creative hooks and upbeat tempos while their cover selection provides you with only one option… to get on your feet and dance!
With an ever growing audience of dedicated fanatics and an always increasing catalog of songs, RF&TS are fully prepared to provide the soundtrack and excitement to any function!

▧ LUMPY GRAVY ▧

SATURDAY – JULY 24th @ 10:00pm

Williamsport’s own jam band, Lumpy Gravy, was formed when Owen MacDonald and Brett Kahn, former members of Kind-a-Mind, began jamming with Mike and John Snyder. Doug McMinn, who played with MacDonald in the George Wesley Band, signed on in the spring of 1998, along with percussionist Ken Damilio. Now, two drummers and three bass players later, Gravy has a new lease on life. MacDonald (guitar, vocals) and McMinn (sax, guitar, vocals) are joined by Aaron Sauers on drums and Jimmy Lovcik on bass in the refurbished lineup. Sauers’ jazzy, eccentric style and Lovcik’s solid but imaginative bass work keep the famous Gravy groove going at peak efficiency. Lovcik has played hundreds of gigs in the last five years with the widely touring Strawberry Jam and Jack’s Farm, While Sauers comes to the band from Downside Sounder and many other local acts including early punk band…..Swan Dive. “Mango”, the bands 2002 CD release, has been well received and the band has just finished a second CD of original music titiled “GRASShopper”. We are getting ready to go back into the studio again to start work on our 3rd CD….Although lately we’ve been playing around with the idea of doing a live recording instead. We shall see.

Bookmark and Share

The band, in it’s current form, started on New Years eve of 2003. Farley, Stopper, and Cumming’s father, Dick Cummings, got together to jam one day, liked what they heard and landed the New Years gig at the Bullfrog Brewery, in Williamsport Pa. Dick ended up not able to make the gig, and sent his son as a substitute.

Farley had originally played in a band with Rich under the name of Black-n-Blues that never solidified. Being a fan of local music hero Doug McMinn, Farley invited McMinn to play saxophone to add something different for a blues band in the area. The four played their first gig together that night and had a blast, won the crowd, and felt a musical chemistry that was undeniable. Farley and Cummings finally found the Black-n-Blues they had been searching for, and the name just seemed to carry over.

The band becomes tighter and more intensely dynamic each gig they play. BNB recently had a chance to perform as the opening act for The Blue Oyster Cult at the Community Arts Center, a definite notch on the belt for the band. March 25th of 2007 Black-n-Blues competed in a regional blues competition and took first place! Making BNB a semifinalist in the International Blues Competition held in Memphis Tennessee in 2008.

▧ BLUE SKY MISSION CLUB ▨

SATURDAY – JULY 10th @ 10:00PM

“Once in a while, a rare while, a band comes along that defines itself in a new way with their own style of music and that is exactly what Blue Sky Mission Club has done. They have combined zydeco, jazz, blues, pop and soulgrass and the mix worked.” -Rob Taylor ERI Jams Magazine, Erie, PA

“Middle Of Everywhere sounds wonderful. Its perfect for long summer drives…” -Jim Donovan of Rusted Root

“The 18th annual Great Blue Heron Festival was an outstanding platform for the release of Blue Sky Mission Club’s highly anticipated new album, “Middle Of Everywhere”. Blue Sky Mission Club was proud to perform new and original zydeco/Soulgrass music this year to a legion of new fans and peers. New songs like “Little Bird“, “How Long” and “Dance With Me Sister” truly grasped the audience with irresistible grooves and blissful harmonies.” -Indy Black, Live Music News and Review

“Ithaca, NY. based Blue Sky Mission Club has been making music under the voice and guidance of founder London McDaniel since 2004. In fact the Bands 2006 CD “Riding the Horizon” is a happy rollicking debut that will undoubtedly get the feet moving.

They just finished a three song EP that takes the roots rock vibe to neat places. “Dance with me Sister” adds horns and a light jazz feel to Lee’s lovely vocals. “Down and out” throbs like a swampy love song as they sing, “You may think I’m Dreaming/But I couldn’t love you any deeper than I do”. And run away tonight is a sweet march that stride into a pop-friendly feel…. Get ready to groove with Roots Rock, Zydeco, Soul and The Blues.”

▧ HAYLEY ▨

SATURDAY – JULY 3RD @ 10:00PM

Like a good shot of whiskey, Hayley is raw yet sophisticated, simple but refined. It’s an acquired taste that keeps you coming back until it becomes your drink of choice. The sound becomes familiar but always provides you with a new experience every time you listen. If avant-garde is the 21st century sound, Hayley is top shelf.

Hayley is based out of Williamsport, Pennsylvania showcasing some of its most talented young musicians. Stemming from diverse musical backgrounds, all of Hayley has grown up experimenting within many different genres based on their eclectic combination of musical influences: including previous bands, personal tastes, and each member’s hard working family music history. Hayley plays very honest experimental rock that still manages to stay true to a traditional hit song form. The hook is to transform each song into an emotional live performance.

Growing up around the music business, Hayley learned all aspects of the industry before most musicians learned their first chord progression. Focusing on producing an intimate and exciting live experience, Hayley wants their provocative sound and relationship with the audience to keep their fan base always wanting and expecting more. Hayley breaks the barriers of current rock music by injecting their bold precision into classic rock’s epic standards. Learning from past experience and continually evolving into the modern precedent, Hayley’s ability to remain innovative provides them the opportunity to challenge the status quo and surpass all expectations of the current scene, lulling their audience into sweet submission.

Royal Benson

Saturday, June 12th @ 10:00pm

It all started in February 2007 when Jordan Thompson (at that time keyboardist for the band Cootie Brown) sat in on drums with Matt Fern and Adam Tarin for a recording session at Ekora Studios. The recording went very well so the trio decided to pursue things further. They started playing gigs in the summer 2007 and then played more and more frequently as 2008 rolled around.

In spring 2008 it was decided the sound of the band was not reaching its full potential. The band started looking for another member, and began talking to bassists around the Central Pennsylvania. After some correspondence with some different players in the area, Tim Meyers eventually came to a practice in Late 2008. Tim fit in like a custom, Italian leather, hand made glove. As of Junary 2009, Tim was officially a member of Royal Benson.

In January 2009 Tim played his first gig which at that time was also their biggest gig to date, a Saturday night at the Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport, Pa. That same night saxophone player Michael ‘Fort’ Fortunato sat in for the first of what would become many gigs with Royal Benson. The Bullfrog Brewery show was a big success and the group moved on with that Line up.

Since then, the Band has played many shows in State College, Williamsport, Lewisburg, Harrisburg and more. Summer 2009 is looking great for Royal Benson, with shows booked at new venues in new places things are looking good, and Fall 2009 is looking even better as Royal Benson will be making it’s first trips to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

George Wesley

Saturday, May 29th @ 10:00pm

George Wesley has written and performed his own infectious music for over four decades creating many memorable songs influenced by the blend of rock’n roll and Caribbean sounds.  Through his countless stops up and down the east coast of the U.S. and in the islands of the Caribbean, people have enjoyed listening and dancing to the original music of George Wesley.

Through the years George has been a headliner at many festivals as well as playing the same stage with a long list of well known artists including The Wailers, Santana, Black Uhuru and Jimmy Cliff.

In 2008 George was voted ‘Best Singer-Songwriter’ by Diamond City Readers Poll.

The music, itself, captures musicians as well as people just out for a good time because George writes from his musical roots… Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead and other diverse influences.  Along with outstanding musicianship and professionalism, George delivers his musical story with warmth and sincerity through clear and effortless singing that only comes to artists with years of honing their skills.

In addition to his original material George Wesley does a “Tribute to Bob Marley” in which he covers Bob Marley “twisted up and smoked” George Wesley style!  He also covers the following artists in his own unique style: Peter Tosh… Jimmy Cliff… Jimi Hendrix… The Rolling Stones… Eric Clapton… Dylan… Grateful Dead… Stevie Ray Vaughn and many more.

The Sun Gazette featured us in this week’s publication of the Showcase. They did a really nice write up of what we have going on and what the place is all about. We encourage you to pick up a copy or subscribe to the Sun Gazette weekly. They provide a lot of great articles especially in the Showcase and interview quite a few of the bands that play at Rumrunners. Special thanks to Len Mahonski for the article and to Rashelle Carey for snapping some great pictures. Keep supporting your local businesses and artists. It’s amazing to see how well downtown Williamsport is doing.

Shade Tree Mechanics

Saturday – May 1st @ 10:00pm

Williamsport’s SHADE TREE MECHANICS are a traditional rhythm and blues band featuring the music of Muddy Waters, Albert King, Bobby Bland and a fistful of fine original songs. Led by Doug McMinn on guitar and vocals, the group specializes in concise arrangements of classic tunes with strong vocals and infectious grooves. Drummer Craig Waltman and bassist Bob Yoas are veterans of countless bands. Waltman played with regional country kingpin Johnny Jolin and Yoas led the fine Beatles tribute band Rubber Soul.

DOUG McMINN, vocals and guitar

A founder of the Billtown Blues Festival and one of Lycoming County’s busiest musicians, Doug made his West Branch debut with Barbara Singer in 1982.  He was a member of the Impromptu Blues Band, which inaugurated live music at Franco’s Lounge in Williamsport and played at the first Billtown Blues Festival.  Doug was a member of State College’s AAA Blues Band, whose CD “High Water” won Billboard Magazine’s “Best Unsigned Band” contest in 1998.  Doug represented the Billtown Blues Association at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2002 as a member of Blues and Gasoline and in 2008 with Black’n'Blues.  In addition to his successful solo act, Doug plays with blues rockers Black ‘n Blues, the Doug McMinn Jazz Quartet, and beloved Billtown jam band Lumpy Gravy.

CRAIG WALTMAN, drums

Craig came to the Mechanics from the widely touring Johnny Jolin Band.  A drummer since the age of five, Craig also played with the Studebakers and Dirty Bird.  He is currently a member of Milltown Blues.

BOB YOAS, bass

Bob was the leader of Rubber Soul, a popular Beatles tribute band, which recently disbanded.  In addition to his duties with Pepper Street,  he finds the time to hold down the bottom for the Mechanics.  One of Williamsport’s best bassists, Bob has played with Bluezilla, Rhythm Face and Loni Gamble & Sound Cheque.

Lights Over Ashfield

Acoustic Duo

Saturday, January 23rd @ 10:00pm

What happens when you distill rock essence into a single, soul-infused guitar and soaring, harmony-laden vocal? Lights Over Ashfield, one of Central Pennsylvania’s hottest bands, answers that by stripping everything but the awesome out of their charged acoustic shows. With a combined two-and-a-half decades of experience, LOA’s Damian Gessel, vocals, and Jamie Rodgers, guitar, are adept at mixing classic and new rock into a creation of their own. Buoyed by Gessel’s by turns towering and silky smooth vocals, the duo tears through everything from AC/DC to Coldplay, at all times maintaining a party atmosphere.

The Dirty Nickels

“The Dirty Nickels are a unique trio that love to find a groove. The band blends blues, funk, rock, R&B, and soul, for a sound reminiscent of the classic blues/rock scene of the late 60s and 70s that brought us such greats as the Allman Brothers, the Blues Brothers, etc. Extremely talented musicians, The Dirty Nickels love to ride the groove for all it’s worth. Quite frankly, they do it quite well.” -Billtown Blues Association

The Keystone Ska Exchange
